                                 Valletta

One of the most beautiful Mediterranean cities

Valletta is one of the most beautiful capital cities you can find in Europe, so rich of History and located between two continents. This city is a legacy of the past, filled with incredible stories. The city was built during the the XVIth Century and was the place where lived the knights of the Order of St. John.

That is the reason why Valletta was one of the most powerful strengths of the Mediterranean Basin. Valletta has not always been the Capital city of Malta, it used to be Mdina in the past.
Nowadays, the capital city is still one of the most attractive cities in Europe. The Grand Harbour is made up with a lot of bays and quays and fortifications. From these spots you can admire the trips of the ferries, the luzzus (those traditional little boats you can easy recognize with their bright colours) and yachts.

The easiest way to discover Valletta is by walk. Valletta is formed with little streets which allow pedestrians to walk in the shadow and in the same time to cool off a bit (which is not a luxury in summer !). And every street seems to end in the clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
The city had a strong interest; it was rebuilt to face the Ottoman threat. You can also notice the British legacy in the streets with the red phone booths everywhere in the city. There are only 7000 inhabitants in the city but thousands of tourists, especially in summer.
There are a lot of museums you absolutely have to visit during your journey. For instance, there is the War museum which tells the story of how Malta resisted to the attacks of World War II and preserved all its treasures.

Among these treasures, you can find the St John’s Co Cathedral in the heart of Valletta. This is a baroque style cathedral which was built between 1573 and 1577 by the knights of Malta. One of the most beautiful in the world. There are a lot of nice gardens in Valletta: You have to stop at the Upper Barraca Gardens; this park was built above the fortifications in the South of the city and from this spot you can admire the harbour and the Three Cities.

Valletta is very mysterious, every street doesn’t look to the others, the city is very picturesque and that is what makes Valletta so special.
